Middendorf war seinerzeit Direktor des Germanischen Lloyds. Diese verantwortungsvolle Position hat das akribisch verfasste und reich bebilderte Buch deutlich beeinflusst: Es sollte ursprünglich dazu dienen, die Sicherheit an Bord der damals noch vielfach verbreiteten Großsegler zu sichern und Konstrukteuren eine Anleitung zum korrekten Aufbau des Riggs bieten. Auch Fragen der Stabilität von Segelschiffen werden ausführlich behandelt. So entstand das bis heute wohl umfassendste deutschsprachige Werk zu diesem Thema, das hier wegen der vielen detaillierten großformatigen Pläne erstmals im DIN A4-Format wieder aufgelegt wird. Es bietet heute dem Liebhaber alter Windjammer eine nahezu unerschöpfliche Erkenntnisquelle über deren Konstruktion und Bau.
