Aber er ist eben auch ein Genie". So wird der Musiker in der Spiegel-Online-Kritik seines 2010 erschienenen Albums „My beautiful dark twisted fantasy" beschrieben. Es taucht nach überladenen und protzigen Auftritten, Interviews und grotesken Äußerungen Wests immer wieder die Frage auf, ob dieser wirklich als Künstler bezeichnet werden kann oder ob er nur megalomanisch veranlagt und größenwahnsinnig ist. Deswegen soll mit dieser Arbeit am Beispiel seines 35-minütigen Kurzfilms „Runaway" von 2010 und an den im Film benutzten Songs und deren filmische Umsetzung untersucht werden, ob „Runaway" wirklich gute Kunst oder nur ein gescheiterter Versuch der Selbstdarstellung ist. Hierfür wird zu Beginn der Arbeit der Inhalt des Films kurz zusammengefasst erläutert, um dem Leser ein einfacheres Verständnis zu bieten. Nachfolgend müssen die Begriffe der „Darstellung" und der „Selbstdarstellung" klar definiert werden, damit zum Schluss eine eindeutige Antwort auf die oben gestellte Frage gegeben werden kann. Nun folgt der Kern der Arbeit, es werden drei der im Film benutzten Songs aus Wests Album „My beautiful dark twisted fantasy" auf Text, das heißt Bedeutung, gegebenenfalls Stilmittel oder geschichtliche Hintergründe, Musik und besonders auf deren filmische Umsetzung, also unter anderem Kamera und Symbole, hin chronologisch analysiert, immer unter der Fragestellung wie sich West hier selbst darstellt und wie das für den Zuschauer ersichtlich wird. Den Schluss der Seminararbeit bildet das Fazit, das auf Grundlage der Ergebnisse der oben genannten Analyse logisch und nachvollziehbar formuliert wird und eine eindeutige Antwort auf die Problemstellung bietet.
