I have been reading Nancy Wahl’s poetry for a few years now. Every time I have read a poem by her it’s been a journey of wonder. One feels comfortable in her narratives but not distracted. The inner workings of the spirit are the seasoning. But it’s not the seasoning alone that creates a Nancy Wahl poem, it’s the choices of the main ingredients - the grandeur of a landscape, the sublime grace of an encounter between two souls aware of their parting as much as their having met. Like the quantum leaps of faith in her poems, the doubts that fuel anxiety are acknowledged and transformed into - yes - journeys of wonder. Her puppet masters make no distinction between the strings, the puppets, and the force that animates. There's a lot of Plato in her poetry. I like the word ‘passion’ and Nancy Wahl has a poem by that name where the poetry appears seamless yet there are multiple facets threaded together and overlapping. One is left pondering the snake man and the enraged bear and the space between the waiter, the narrator and the passions. How do we know our hunger, gauge the relationship between appetite and actual (in)satiability. Nancy Wahl’s poetry is a cosmic measurement of hunger, of faith, of doubt and wonder and I much look forward to reading her book of poetry. – Dean Pasch
